Lower Teign Fishing Association

The Lower Teign Fishing Association manages over eight miles of prime fishing for sea trout, brown trout, and salmon on the River Teign, extending from Dunsford to Newton Abbot. In addition, the Association controls sections of the River Bovey from Bovey Tracey to its confluence with the Teign.

The Teign is widely regarded as one of the finest sea trout rivers in the South West, with approximately 3,000 fish recorded passing through the counter at Sowton in 2025. This figure does not include the significant number of fish that migrate via the River Bovey.

The upper reaches flow through the picturesque and historic Teign Valley, offering a variety of attractive pools and runs that hold sea trout in season, alongside excellent and often underrated brown trout fishing. The lower river, from Chudleigh to Newton Abbot, is generally slower flowing, characterised by larger pools that provide outstanding opportunities for both sea trout and, in suitable conditions, salmon.

Full members enjoy access to all Association waters. Associate members may fish the River Bovey and the semi-tidal stretch of the Teign downstream of Teign Bridge.

Day tickets are available to visiting anglers on three extensive beats and can be purchased via our partner, FishPal.

Anglers are permitted to fly fish and spin during daylight hours. Night fishing is restricted to fly fishing only. Treble hooks are prohibited across all waters, and spinners and lures are limited to a maximum of two hook points.

The Association strongly encourages catch and release for brown trout and sea trout, particularly larger breeding fish. Catch and release is mandatory for all salmon.
